How to Keep the Floor Around a Cat Litter Box Clean
If you’re a cat owner, you’ll know that keeping the area around the litter box clean can sometimes feel like a never-ending job. Between scattered litter, paw prints and the occasional little accident, the floor around the litter tray can need cleaning far more often than the rest of the room.
One problem I occasionally have with my own cat, Roxie, is what I call “piddle paws.” 🐾
Every now and then, she steps out of her litter box with slightly wet paws and leaves little paw prints on the floor around it. It’s not a huge mess, but it’s something I want to clean up straight away.

I didn’t want to get out a bucket and traditional mop every time this happened, so I recently bought a spray mop from Amazon specifically for quick clean-ups around her litter box.
It has turned out to be such a simple solution that I wanted to share what I’m doing, along with a few other ways I keep the litter-box area cleaner.
My Quick Solution for Piddle Paws: A Spray Mop
The main reason I bought a spray mop was convenience.
If I notice little paw prints around Roxie’s litter box, I want to be able to clean them up immediately rather than leave them until I’m mopping the entire floor.
With the spray mop, I can simply grab it, spray the area, give the floor a quick clean and put the mop away again.
There’s no bucket to fill and no need to mop the entire room just because of a few little paw prints.
For me, that makes it ideal for those small, everyday pet messes that need attention between bigger cleans.

What I particularly like is being able to keep it ready to go. When I notice a small mess, I can deal with it immediately rather than putting it off until later.

My Routine for Keeping the Litter-Box Area Clean
The spray mop is only one part of keeping the area tidy.
I find that dealing with small messes as they happen makes it much easier to prevent the litter-box area from becoming a bigger cleaning job.
I regularly check for scattered litter and paw marks around the tray. Loose litter can be quickly swept or vacuumed, while small floor marks can be dealt with using the spray mop.
I also give the surrounding area a more thorough clean regularly rather than relying solely on quick spot cleaning.
The goal for me isn’t to have a perfectly spotless litter-box area every second of the day — that’s probably unrealistic when you live with a cat! Instead, I want a simple routine that makes it easy to keep on top of everyday mess.
How to Reduce Litter Tracking Around the House
Paw prints aren’t the only issue. Somehow, cat litter has an incredible ability to travel much further from the litter box than you’d expect.
A litter-catching mat placed outside the tray can help catch some of the litter from your cat’s paws before it gets tracked through the house.
Regular vacuuming around the litter area can also make a big difference.
This is another reason I love convenient cleaning products in a pet home. Anything that makes it easier to do a quick clean when you notice a mess is much more likely to actually get used.
How I Reduce Litter Tracking Around the Litter Box
A spray mop helps me deal with little paw prints and messes, but preventing as much mess as possible in the first place makes cleaning even easier.
One simple way to do this is to place a good cat litter mat outside the litter tray. A litter mat can help catch loose litter from your cat’s paws before it gets tracked further through your home.

Don’t Forget About Pet Hair
Of course, litter and little paw prints aren’t the only things we’re cleaning up as cat owners.

Is a Spray Mop Worth Having If You Own a Cat?
For me, yes — although I wouldn’t say every cat owner needs one.
What I like about mine is that it solves a very specific problem in my home.
I bought it because I wanted something I could keep handy for those little paw prints around Roxie’s litter box, and that’s exactly what I use it for.
It’s quick, convenient and saves me from getting out a traditional mop and bucket for a tiny area of floor.
And I’ve found myself using it for other small floor messes around the house too.
A Cleaner Pet-Friendly Home Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated
Living with pets inevitably means a little more cleaning.
There will be fur. There will be litter. And, occasionally in my house at least, there will be piddle paws! 🐾
I’ve found that having the right cleaning tools within easy reach makes those everyday messes much less frustrating.
For me, keeping a spray mop near Roxie’s litter-box area means I can deal with little paw prints almost immediately and get on with my day.
Sometimes the simplest cleaning solutions are the ones you end up using the most.
